Artist's Statement
(The image to the right is entitled "TV Shot" and is a ceramic and steel sculpture which can be found on our website: click here to view)
The nature of my work has always been rooted in glimpses of images and remembered experiences from growing up on a working ranch in Texas.
Traveling extensively in the southwestern United States, particularly the desert southwest and the Four Corners Region have all produced strong color and texture references that have made lasting impressions on me.
The repeated use of layering in my work is reflective of geological processes such as sedimentation and erosion that dates back to my memory of raw landscapes.
I work like an abstract painter, creating mixed media sculpture (ceramics, cast resin, steel, and acrylic lacquers) with heavily layered surfaces in which color and light are used to push and pull against an array of organic forms and textures.
The visual material I investigate allows the content to inform my technique. The sculptures are rarely consciously referential, but can be read as landscape, figure, objects from an archeological dig, as well as abstraction. Many times, the objects are fetish-like in their appearance and baroque in form.
Many of the compositions are actually photographic reproductions of surfaces that I have created. I transfer digital images onto ceramic tiles, sculpture and linen prints.
